Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic Rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is nasal inflammation from an immune overreaction to airborne allergens like pollen, dust mites, or pet dander, causing sneezing, itching, runny/stuffy nose, and watery eyes, treatable with avoidance, antihistamines, nasal sprays, or immunotherapy, and can be seasonal or year-round.

Common Triggers

Pollen: From trees, grasses, and weeds (seasonal).

Dust Mites: Microscopic bugs found in homes.

Animal Dander: Flakes of skin or fur from pets.

Molds: Spores from fungi.

Other: Pollutants, certain foods, insects.

Symptoms

Sneezing, runny or stuffy nose.

Itchy nose, eyes, mouth, or throat.

Watery, red eyes.

Postnasal drip (mucus dripping down the throat).

Coughing, dark circles under eyes (allergic shiners).

Types

Seasonal: Occurs at specific times of the year (e.g., pollen seasons).

Perennial: Occurs year-round (e.g., dust mites, pet dander).

In Ayurveda, allergic rhinitis (Vata-Kaphaja Pratishyay) stems from Vata and Kapha dosha imbalance, leading to toxin (Ama) buildup, blocking respiratory channels, and causing symptoms like sneezing, congestion, and itching; management focuses on detoxification (Panchakarma, Nasya), herbal remedies (Sitopaladi Churna, Guduchi), diet (avoiding cold/oily foods), lifestyle changes (stress reduction, exercise), and balancing Vata/Kapha with warming herbs and therapies like Shirodhara.

*Ayurvedic Understanding
Root Cause*: Imbalance of Vata (dryness, irritation) and Kapha (mucus, congestion), aggravated by weak digestion (Mandagni) and Ama (toxins).
Channels Affected: Pranavaha Srotas (respiratory channels) become blocked.
Triggers: Cold weather, dust, incompatible foods, emotional stress, poor sleep.

Management Strategies

Detoxification (Shodhana): Panchakarma therapies, especially Nasya (nasal oil application) using oils like Anu Taila, clear blockages and improve immunity.
Herbal Medicines:

  • Sitopaladi Churna (for cough/congestion),
  • Guduchi Kwath (decoction).
  • Rajanyadi Churna.
  • Ashwagandhadi compound

Diet

Favor warm, light, easily digestible foods (fruits, vegetables, whole grains).
Avoid cold, heavy, oily, or spicy foods.
Avoid incompatible food combinations (e.g., milk with fish).
Lifestyle (Vihar):
Regular sleep, stress management.
Gentle exercise.
Therapies:
Shirodhara: Medicated oil poured on the forehead to calm the nervous system and reduce stress.
Dhoompana: Medicated smoking.
